Political deepfakes are spreading like wildfire because of GenAI

Deepfakes abound

The co-authors reported that generators produced deepfakes in almost half of the tests (41%) – regardless that Midjourney, Microsoft and OpenAI had implemented specific policies against election disinformation. The co-authors found that not all image generators tended to supply the identical kinds of political deepfakes. And some were consistently worse offenders than others.

Social diffusion

Generators can have made it easier to create election deepfakes, but social media made these deepfakes easier to spread.

In the CCDH study, the co-authors highlight a case wherein an AI-generated image of Donald Trump at a barbecue was fact-checked in a single post but not in others – others that subsequently received a whole lot of hundreds of views.

X claims that community notes on a post will routinely appear in posts with appropriate media. However, based on the study, this doesn’t appear to be the case. Not a simple solution

So what’s the answer to the deepfakes problem? Is there one there?
