A crossroads for computer science at MIT

On Vassar Street, in the center of the MIT campus, the MIT Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing recently opened the doors to its recent headquarters in Building 45. A physical embodiment

Academic operations began this semester in each the lecture hall and the classroom with 13 courses for bachelor's and master's students. Topics include 6.C35/6.C85 (Interactive Data Visualization and Society), a course taught by faculty from the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) and Urban Studies and Planning departments. The class was created as a part of the Commonalities for computer science educationa cross-college initiative that brings together multiple departments to develop and teach recent courses and launch recent programs that mix computer science with other disciplines.

“The recent college constructing not only meets educational and research needs, but in addition promotes extensive community connections. “It was especially exciting to see the school within the constructing and the lobby stuffed with students on any given day, engrossed of their studies or simply having fun with the space while taking a break,” said Asu Ozdaglar, associate dean of the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing and head of EECS.

The research groups form a coherent overall cluster within the areas of deep learning and generative AI, natural language processing, computer vision, robotics, reinforcement learning, game theory methods and social effects of AI.

Others will follow suit, including a number of the ten teachers who were hired common positions from the College with the Departments of Brain and Cognitive Sciences; chemical engineering; comparative media studies and writing; earth, atmospheric and planetary sciences; music and theater arts; Mechanical engineering; nuclear science and engineering; political science; and the MIT Sloan School of Management.

Other university programs and activities supported within the constructing include the MIT Quest for Intelligence, the Center for Computational Science and Engineering, and the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab. In addition, there are separate areas for the dean's office and for the university's cross-sectional areas – the Social and ethical responsibility of the pcCommon Ground and Special Semester Topics in Computing, a brand new experimental program designed to bring MIT researchers and visitors together for a semester in a shared space on areas of interest.

Additional space includes conference rooms on the third floor, which can be found to be used by all university units. These rooms are accessible to each residents and non-residents of the constructing to carry weekly group meetings or other computer science-related activities.

For the MIT community at large, the constructing's primary event room and three conference rooms can be found for meetings, events and conferences. “When designing a brand new multi-purpose constructing like this, I see my role as dean as ensuring that the constructing meets the functional requirements of the university mission,” says Huttenlocher. “I feel that now that the constructing is finished, my biggest joy is seeing how its form supports the wide selection of functions intended.”

In keeping with MIT's commitment to environmental sustainability, the constructing is designed to fulfill Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification. The final inspection by the US Green Building Council goals for platinum certification.

The glass shingles on the south side of the constructing serve a dual purpose: they let in loads of natural light and form a double-skin facade of interlocking elements that create a deep, sealed cavity that is meant to significantly reduce energy consumption.

Other sustainability features include carbon tracking, on-site stormwater management, indoor potable water consumption reduction devices, and a big green roof. The constructing can also be the primary to utilize heat from a newly accomplished utility plant constructed on the roof of Building 42, which converted traditional distributed steam systems into more efficient hot water systems. This conversion will significantly improve the constructing's capability to more efficiently provide medium temperature hot water throughout the ability.
