Privacy-focused search engine Brave announced Wednesday that it can revamp its answer engine to return AI-powered, synthesized answers. The recent feature is on the market to users world wide.
The recent “Answers with AI” feature provides cleanly formatted answers to questions like “People who walked on the moon,” “List of all of the actors who played Batman,” or “How to descale Nespresso Pixie.” For example, reviews and salient points of a restaurant will also be summarized.
The company launched an AI-powered summarization feature in March 2023. The startup said its recent AI-powered search is a giant improvement on this.
Brave said requests for information, just like the one listed through the brand new response engine, will mechanically depend on AI to present information in a summarized format. For other queries, users can manually trigger an AI search.
The company, which switched to using its own index for search queries last 12 months, said its Answers with AI feature uses a mix of enormous language models (LLMs) and trusted data. Brave said it uses a mix of Mixtral 8x7B and Mistral 7B as primary models together with custom transformer models for semantic matching and response.
“The user only has to enter a search query, as they might with a standard search engine. The query is then converted internally into an LLM prompt, using the information from the search results as context for the prompt, with typical RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation),” the corporate's head of search, Josep Pujol, said via email TechCrunch.
Several Reports have identified that AI-powered search could have serious implications for the longer term of the online. Brave, which handles over 10 billion queries per 12 months, said that while users are demanding AI-powered answers and recent ways to devour content, the corporate recognizes that this approach is for publishers publishing content on the web , might be harmful.
“This challenge shouldn’t be unique to Brave Search, but is present in most AI-powered answer engines and chatbots, whether premium or open. Brave, as a browser and search engine, is aware of those challenges. Consequently, we’ll monitor and quantify the impact of AI-generated content on website visits and ultimately address the disruptions that the decline in traffic may cause,” the corporate said.
Other engines like google like Google and Bing have also adopted AI-powered answers through various experiments. Meanwhile, startups like Perplexity and You.com are also vying to be the reply machine of selection for users.
