But perhaps not for long, if artificial intelligence has a say. AI all the time wanted our jobs, now it wants our anger. The query is whether or not anything has the proper to endure that anger without permission, and whether anyone is willing to fight for our right to be indignant.
This month, the individually listed cell phone arm of Masayoshi Son's SoftBank technology empire said it was working on developing an AI-powered system to guard intimidated call center employees from tirades and the wide selection of verbal abuse that fall under the definition of customer harassment.

It's unclear whether SoftBank was deliberately attempting to evoke a dystopia by naming this project, however the name “EmotionCancelling Voice Conversion Engine” exudes a desolation that will make George Orwell pale.
The technology, developed at an AI research institute founded by SoftBank and the University of Tokyo, remains to be within the research and development phase, and the early demo version suggests there remains to be numerous work to be done. But the principle already works to some extent, and it's as strange as you may expect.
In theory, the voice-altering AI alters the fashion of an indignant human caller in real time, so the person on the opposite end hears only a watered-down, harmless version. SoftBank's AI for voice changing

But protecting employees shouldn't be the one consideration here. Anger might be very uncomfortable and frightening, but it might probably be legitimate, and care have to be taken when artificially removing it from the shopper relationship script – especially when it only increases when the shopper realizes that their outbursts of anger are being quelled by a machine.
Companies world wide can – and do – warn their customers about abusive staff. But when someone expresses anger without their permission (or by hiding that permission within the advantageous print), you cross a very important line, especially when AI is tasked with removing that anger.
The line is crossed when an individual's emotions or a selected tone of voice are commercialized for treatment and neutralization. Anger is a simple goal for elimination, but why not use AI to guard call center agents from disappointment, sadness, urgency, desperation, and even gratitude? What if it was decided that some regional accents were more threatening than others, and these were softened by an algorithm without the knowledge of their owners?
In an intensive series of essays published last weekLeopold Aschenbrenner, a former researcher at OpenAI who campaigned to guard society from the technology, warned that while everyone was talking about AI, “few had the slightest idea what was coming.”
Given all this, our greatest strategy is perhaps to stay furious.
