With technology giants like Apple, Samsung, Google and Microsoft investing heavily in AI research and development, the age of “AI devices” has finally arrived.
Apple's AI features are scheduled to launch in September 2024 as a part of iOS 18. These include AI-generated Genmoji images, a wiser and more intuitive Siri, and a writing assistant called Rewrite.
These recent features, a few of that are grouped under the name “Apple Intelligence,” include Apple’s use of proprietary models, OpenAI's modelsand possibly even a Collaboration integration with Google's Twins Models in the longer term.
News agencies like ZDNet There is theory that Anthropic's “Claude” can be a possibility, which might mean that Apple Intelligence is taking the “best” from virtually every corner of the AI industry.
Apple has at all times been known for its “walled garden” approach, where every aspect of its hardware and software is tightly controlled. Few firms up to now have been so hesitant to integrate third-party services into their core offering, especially direct competitors like Google.
It could also be confusing for consumers to learn that their iPhone, which has been an Apple device through and thru for a long time, is now suddenly equipped with Google technology.
Michael Gartenberg, technology analyst and former marketing director at Apple, said of this strange collaboration: WIRED“In the past, this leak would have killed the deal,” he said, adding: “The first rule of any take care of Apple is: Don't discuss Apple.”
This chimera of AI integrations will likely be confusing each commercially and regulatory-wise, as became clear when the EU discussed concerns that Apple’s AI suite, dubbed “Apple Intelligence,” posed the chance of Violation of the Digital Markets Act.
Others, including Elon Musk, are concerned that bringing multiple AI providers to people's devices poses a serious privacy risk.
A related message states that Apple Intelligence will initially be available as a free feature set, but the corporate is searching for ways to monetize its AI offerings in the longer term.
This features a paid tier called “Apple Intelligence+,” which offers subscribers additional features.
Could or not it’s that Apple will ultimately charge its users for Google or Microsoft's services and share within the revenue?!
It doesn't sound likely on paper, but AI seems to have thrown the old rules overboard.
Samsung wants to maintain up
In this moderately bizarre AI-crazed smartphone market, every motion has an opposite response.
Not to be outdone by its competitor, Samsung, the world's largest smartphone manufacturer, can be pushing forward its own AI integration strategy.
The company is anticipated to showcase its AI capabilities on the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked eventwhere the corporate is prone to introduce recent AI-powered features for its flagship devices.
According to rumors, Samsung will introduce AI-powered camera features in its upcoming foldable smartphones Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, comparable to improved low-light performance and real-time object detection.
Additionally, the corporate is anticipated to introduce AI-powered health and fitness features in its Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Ring wearables, offering personalized workout recommendations and real-time health monitoring.
Samsung's AI efforts are further strengthened by its partnership with Google, which once more shows that the AI industry has few real allies.
Meanwhile, Google recently announced that it is going to integrate Gemini AI into Google Messages, allowing users to access the AI service directly inside the app.
It seems that Android, at the least, is trying to take care of some semblance of independence while Apple and Samsung compete to include AI technologies into other brands' products.
PCs will not be far behind
Leaving smartphones aside for a moment, AI PCs with dedicated neural processing units (NPUs) are slowly but surely becoming the norm.
Gartner estimates that 54.4 million AI PCs will likely be shipped in 2024while IDC and Canalys predict that 60% of all PCs shipped will likely be “AI-powered” by 2027.
Manufacturers comparable to AMD and Intel are developing solutions that mix the performance of CPU, GPU and NPU in a single package.
Local computing allows AI PCs to essentially run AI workloads locally on the pc – that’s, there isn’t a must send and receive data from cloud services. Local AI capabilities in your laptop permit you to use AI features on the PC without an online connection.
This may permit you to dictate functions to your PC using voice to navigate menus, open applications, etc. without the Internet.
Windows has already introduced its Copilot AI tools; some recent laptops will include a dedicated co-pilot button.
Useful? Maybe. It's very difficult to say how strong the buyer appetite for AI features in PCs and smartphones really is.
A consumer study showed that around 25% of Samsung Galaxy S24 buyers found AI integration to be a robust motivator.
One thing is definite: technology firms are convinced that folks now want AI integrated directly into their devices. In some cases, they’re willing to take the chance of bringing half-finished tools to market or getting into unusual collaborations just to realize a market edge in the sector of AI.
And they're collaborating with competitors, which may very well be quite confusing for watching consumers.
