There is a battle raging on the earth of artificial intelligence (AI). On one side are firms that wish to keep the information sets and algorithms behind their sophisticated software secret and confidential. On the opposite side are firms that want to offer the general public insight into the secrets of their sophisticated AI models.
Think of this because the battle between open source and closed source AI.
In recent weeks, Meta, Facebook’s parent company, has taken up the fight for open source AI on a big scale by Share a brand new collection of huge AI models. This features a model called Llama 3.1 405B, which Meta's founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg says is “the primary pioneer-level open source AI model.”
This is sweet news for anyone who cares a few future where everyone can profit from some great benefits of AI.
The danger of closed-source AI – and the promise of open-source AI
Closed-source AI refers to models, datasets, and algorithms which might be proprietary and confidential. Examples include ChatGPT, Google's Gemini And Claude from Anthropics.

Perhaps most significantly, open source AI allows for close investigation and identification of potential biases and vulnerabilities.
However, open source AI brings with it recent risks and ethical concerns.
For example, quality control will likely be low in open source products. Since hackers may access the code and data, the models are also more vulnerable to cyberattacks and may be customized and individualized for malicious purposes, for instance by retraining the model with data from the dark web.
An open source AI pioneer
Among all of the leading AI firms, Meta has emerged as a pioneer of open source AI. With its recent suite of AI models, it delivers on what OpenAI promised when it began in December 2015 – namely, to advance digital intelligence “in a way that best advantages humanity as an entire,” as OpenAI said on the time.
