Procreate positions itself against generative AI and guarantees never to integrate the technology into its products

Popular iPad design app Procreate is speaking out against generative AI and has vowed never to introduce generative AI features into its products. The company said at its website that while machine learning is a “compelling technology with many benefits,” the present path of generative AI is flawed for his or her platform.

Procreate goes on to say that it’ll not pursue technology that poses a threat to human creativity, even when doing so could potentially put the corporate “liable to being left behind.”

Procreate CEO James Cuda spoke out much more clearly against the technology in a video posted to X on Monday.

“I actually fucking hate generative AI,” Cuda said within the video. “I don't like what's happening within the industry and I don't like what it's doing to artists. We're not going to introduce generative AI into our products. Our products are all the time designed and developed with the concept that a human goes to create something.”

The company's stance has been praised by many online artists, although many are unhappy with the way in which other digital art and illustration apps are embracing the technology.

For example, the illustration app Clip Studio Paint withdrew his plans, a picture generator tool after facing backwinds from its user base in 2022.

Adobe, which arguably has the most well-liked suite of design tools, has integrated several generative AI features into its products. In addition, Adobe recently got here under fire after its updated terms of service suggested that it could train AI models using user content. The company later needed to make clear that it doesn’t train AI models on customer content.

At a time when digital art platforms in all places are embracing AI, it's interesting to see a preferred app break through the group. Given that Procreate's announcement drew widespread praise from artists and designers, it’ll be interesting to see if other firms follow suit.

“We don't know exactly how this story will proceed and the way it’ll end. But we imagine we’re on the suitable track and supporting human creativity,” Cuda said.
