At the Dartmouth conference, not only was the term “artificial intelligence” coined, but a whole field of research was brought together. It is sort of a mythical big bang of AI – the whole lot we all know today about machine learning, neural networks and deep learning has its origins in that summer in New Hampshire.

But the legacy of this summer is complicated.

Artificial intelligence prevailed as a term over other terms proposed or in use on the time. This overconfidence is a recurring theme in AI development and has led to several cycles of hype and disappointment.

Simon explained in 1965 that “inside 20 years, machines will have the ability to do any job a human can do.” Minsky predicted in 1967 that “inside a generation (…) the issue of making ‘artificial intelligence’ will likely be essentially solved.”

Popular Futurist Ray Kurzweil now predicts it is barely five years away: “We will not be quite there yet, but we will likely be there, and by 2029 it’s going to have the ability to maintain up with any human.”

Reorienting our pondering: New insights from Dartmouth

So how can AI researchers, AI users, governments, employers and most people move forward in a more balanced way?

An necessary step is to just accept the difference and the usefulness of machine systems. Instead of specializing in the race for “artificial general intelligence”, we will give attention to the unique strengths of the systems we now have built – for instance, the large creative capability of image models.
