Miami teenagers arrested for using artificial intelligence to create nude photos of classmates

March 14, 2024: Two teenagers, ages 13 and 14, from Miami, Florida were arrested on December 22, 2023, for allegedly creating and sharing AI-generated nude images of their classmates without their consent.

According to a police Report quoted by WIREDThe teenagers used an unnamed “AI app” to generate unique images of female and male classmates aged 12 and 13.

The incident occurred on Pinecrest Cove Academy in Miamiresulted in the scholars being suspended on December 6 and was subsequently reported to the Miami-Dade Police Department.

The arrests and charges against the teenagers are believed to be the primary of their kind within the United States in reference to the sharing of nude photos created using artificial intelligence.

Under a 2022 Florida state law that criminalizes the distribution of sexually explicit deepfake images without the victim's consent, the teenagers face third-degree felony charges, comparable to auto theft or false imprisonment.

So far, neither the parents of the accused boys nor the responsible investigator and prosecutor have commented on the case.

The problem of minors using artificial intelligence to create nude photos and explicit images of other children is becoming increasingly common in class districts across the country.
