Amazon begins testing ads in its Rufus chatbot

Rufus, Amazon's recently launched shopping-focused chatbot, is about to get promoting.

That is after to a changelog that Amazon published this week (first discovered by AdWeek) that claims sponsored ads could soon appear in placements for Rufus users within the U.S. Ads might be shown based on Amazon search and conversation context, Amazon says, and Rufus can generate text to accompany existing ad copy in certain cases.

“We're continually improving the Rufus experience, including improving brand and product discovery by introducing relevant sponsored ads that help customers discover decisions related to their Rufus conversation,” a spokesperson said.

The ads within the Rufus test are paying homage to Microsoft's experiments inserting ads into Copilot, the chatbot in Bing, and the corporate's other products, including Windows. Since AI is a costly endeavor, it's not exactly surprising that firms are on the lookout for proven methods to get a return on investment – or no less than break even.
