OpenAI has hired its first chief economist: Aaron Chatterji, former chief economist on the Commerce Department under President Joe Biden and senior economist on President Barack Obama's Council of Economic Advisers.
Chatterji, who can be a professor of economics and public policy at Duke University, will do this study The Economic Impact of AI at OpenAI, leading research on how AI could impact economic growth and job prospects.
Notably, Chatterji helped coordinate the Biden administration's implementation of the 2022 CHIPS Act, which authorized roughly $280 billion in funding for computer chip development within the United States. His understanding of the project – and the political context – could help OpenAI develop chips of its own efforts.
Chatterji wasn't the one high-profile OpenAI worker today. The company too appointed Scott Schools, former deputy attorney general and head of compliance at Uber, as latest chief compliance officer. He will work with OpenAI's board and teams across the corporate on legal requirements and ethics, OpenAI said.
