The next superpower can be a technology superpower, and to be that superpower that you must have some control over the semiconductor industry that’s driving the AI ​​revolution. But just about all modern semiconductors are made in Taiwan – and the country is under constant threat of Chinese invasion. President Joe Biden's Chips Act guarantees lavish subsidies for firms working to bring semiconductor manufacturing back to U.S. soil. Will these subsidies survive when Donald Trump, the president-elect, is within the White House? The FT's James Kynge is in Phoenix, Arizona, the previous heartland of American chipmaking. He speaks to those attempting to revive the U.S. chipmaking industry.
