Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing education and schools and universities are increasingly experimenting with it AI chatbots to support students in self-directed learning.
These digital assistants provide immediate feedback, answer questions and guide students through complex content. For teachers, chatbots can reduce their workload by helping them provide scalable and personalized feedback to students.
But what makes an efficient AI teaching assistant? Should or not it’s warm and friendly or skilled and competent? What are the potential pitfalls of integrating such technology into the classroom?
Our ongoing research examines student preferences and highlights the advantages and challenges of using AI chatbots in education.
Warm or competent?
We have developed two AI chatbots – John and Jack. Both chatbots were designed to help university students with self-directed learning tasks, but differed of their personas and interaction styles.
John, the “warm” chatbot, had a friendly face and casual clothing. His communication style was encouraging and empathetic and he used phrases like “good!” and “big progress!” Keep it up!”.
When the scholars encountered difficulty, John responded supportively, “It looks like this part could be difficult. I’m here to assist!” His demeanor was aimed toward creating a snug and accessible learning environment.
Jack, the “competent” chatbot, had an authoritative appearance wearing formal business attire. His answers were clear and direct, like “right” or “good!” That’s exactly what I used to be searching for.”
When identifying problems, he was direct: “I see some problems here. Let's determine where it may possibly be improved.” Jack's personality should convey professionalism and efficiency.
We introduced the chatbots to school students during their self-directed learning activities. We then collected data about their experiences through surveys and interviews.
Distinctive preferences
We found that there have been different preferences amongst students. Those with technical backgrounds tended to prefer Jack's straightforward and concise approach. An engineering student commented:
Jack felt like someone I could take more seriously. He also identified a number of additional things that John hadn't mentioned when asked the identical query.
This indicates knowledgeable and efficient interaction style that can appeal to students who value precision and directness of their studies.
Other students appreciated John's friendly demeanor and detailed explanations. They found his accessible style helpful, especially when exploring complex concepts. One student noted:
John's encouraging feedback made me feel more comfortable tackling difficult topics.
Interestingly, some students wanted a balance between the 2 styles. They valued John's empathy, but additionally valued Jack's efficiency.
The weaknesses of Jack and John
While many students found the AI ​​chatbots helpful, several concerns and potential weaknesses were highlighted. Some felt that the chatbots occasionally provided superficial answers that lacked depth. As one student noted:
At times the answers felt generic and didn't fully address my query.
There can be a risk of scholars becoming overly reliant on AI support, potentially hindering the event of critical pondering and problem-solving skills. One student admitted:
I worry that if I at all times get answers right away, I'll turn into less and fewer inclined to figure things out alone.
Sometimes the chatbots also struggled to grasp the context or nuances of complex questions. One student noted:
When I asked for a selected case study, the chatbot couldn't grasp the intricacies and gave a broad answer.
This highlighted the challenges of AI in interpreting complex human language and specialized content.
Concerns about privacy and data security have also been raised. Some students were concerned in regards to the data collected during interactions.
Additionally, possible biases in AI responses were a serious concern. Because AI systems learn from existing data, they’ll inadvertently perpetuate biases of their training material.
Future-proof classrooms
The results highlight the necessity for a balanced approach when integrating AI into education. Giving students the flexibility to customize their AI assistant's personality could cater to different preferences and learning styles. Human oversight stays crucial. Teachers should proceed to play a central role in guiding students and addressing areas where AI falls short. AI ought to be seen as a tool to support human educators, not replace them. Another vital aspect is coping with privacy and bias. Institutions must implement strict privacy policies and often audit AI systems to reduce bias and ensure ethical use.

The nuances of AI within the classroom
Our study is ongoing and we plan to expand it to incorporate more students from different courses and academic levels. This broader scope will help us higher understand the nuances of interactions between students and AI teaching assistants.
By recognizing each the strengths and weaknesses of AI chatbots, we aim to support the event of tools that improve learning outcomes while addressing potential challenges.
The findings from this research could have a big impact on how universities design and implement AI teaching assistants in the long run.
