Amazon is launching a brand new AI agent-focused lab led by Adept co-founder

Amazon says it’s establishing a brand new research and development lab in San Francisco, the Amazon AGI SF Lab, that can deal with developing “foundational” skills for AI agents.

The Amazon AGI SF Lab, led by David Luan, co-founder of AI startup Adept, will seek to develop agents that may “take motion within the digital and physical worlds” and handle “complex workflows” using computers . Web browser and code interpreter.

“Our work will construct on that of Amazon’s broader AGI team,” one said post co-written by Luan and Pieter Abbeel, a robotics research leader who got here to Amazon through the corporate's “license and lease agreement” with Covariant. An Amazon spokesperson told TechCrunch that Abbeel will work “closely” with Luan and the AGI SF Lab in the long run.

“Our initial focus is on several key research deployments that enable AI agents to perform real-world actions, learn from human feedback, self-course correct, and infer our goals,” Luan and Abbeel added.

The lab will probably be staffed by Adept employees, and Amazon says it plans to rent just a few “dozens” of additional researchers in areas equivalent to quantitative finance, physics and arithmetic.

In June, Adept, which develops AI-powered agents to finish software-based tasks, agreed to license its technology to Amazon, and Luan and parts of Adept's team joined the e-commerce giant. Luan worked under – and can proceed to work under – former Alexa boss Rohit Prasad, who leads an AGI team specializing in large language models.

Amazon's quasi-acquisition of Adept was just like the deal Microsoft made with AI company Inflection in May. Both have accommodate regulatory control As policymakers within the U.S. and abroad attempt to determine whether tech giants are stifling their AI rivals.

Adept was founded two years ago with the goal of developing an AI model that may perform natural language actions on any software tool. At a high level, the vision was to create a type of “AI teammate” trained to make use of quite a lot of different software tools and APIs.

Many others now share this vision. According to Emergen Research, “agentic” AI might be Value The sector is predicted to be value $31 billion by the tip of the yr. According to a study by Capgemini, 82 percent of organizations say they plan to integrate AI agents inside three years Opinion poll — attracted by the potential improvements in efficiency.

In addition to startups like Orby, Emergence and Rabbit, OpenAI and other major AI players are developing agent products to finish tasks largely autonomously. OpenAI competitor Anthropic released its version of the technology earlier this yr Google is reportedly working on AI agents that could make purchases, equivalent to booking flights and hotels.

Amazon has tried in the sector of agents, but has not yet played a serious role. In July, the corporate announced conversational agents for its Bedrock AI development platform, and just last week it brought business and developer agents to its Amazon Q Business assistant platform. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has since hinted at a more agent-like Alexa – one which can’t only answer questions but in addition take motion.
