Google says customers can use its AI in “high-risk” domains so long as there may be human oversight

Google has modified its terms to make clear that customers can use its generative AI tools to make “automated decisions” in “high-risk areas” like healthcare, so long as a human is involved.

The previous Google's draft terms included a blanket ban on high-risk automated decision-making when it involves the corporate's generative AI. “The human oversight requirement has all the time been a part of our policies for all high-risk domains,” a Google spokesperson said when reached for comment via email. “(We) are re-categorizing some elements (in our terms) and giving some examples more explicitly to make them clearer to users.”

Google's biggest AI competitors, OpenAI and Anthropic, have stricter rules for using their AI in high-risk automated decision-making. For example, OpenAI prohibits the usage of its services for automated decisions regarding credit, employment, housing, education, social assessment and insurance. Anthropic allows its AI to be utilized in legal, insurance, healthcare and other high-risk areas for automated decision-making, but only under the supervision of a “qualified skilled” – and requires customers to reveal that they’re using AI for this purpose.
