The Ray-Ban Meta data glasses from Meta are on the rise several recent AI-powered upgradesincluding the flexibility to have an ongoing conversation with Meta's AI and translate between languages.
Ray-Ban Meta owners within the US and Canada Meta Early Access program can now download firmware v11, which adds “Live AI.” First introduced this fall, Live AI allows wearers to repeatedly converse with Meta AI, Meta's AI assistant, to reference things they previously discussed in conversation. Without having to say the wake word “Hey, Meta,” wearers can interrupt Meta AI to ask follow-up questions or change the topic.
Live AI also works with real-time videos. Wearers can ask questions in real time about what they see – for instance, what's of their neighborhood.
Real-time AI video for Ray-Ban Meta was a key focus of Meta's Connect developer conference earlier this fall. Positioned as a solution to OpenAI's Advanced Voice Mode with Vision and Google's Project Astra, the technology allows Meta's AI to reply questions on what’s in the sphere of view of the glasses' front camera.
With Monday's update, Meta becomes certainly one of the primary tech giants to market real-time AI video on smart glasses. Google recently announced that it plans to sell AR glasses with similar features, but the corporate hasn't committed to a selected timeline.
Meta claims that in the longer term, live AI will even make “useful suggestions” before a wearer asks for them. What suggestions? The company didn't need to say that.
Firmware v11 also introduces Live Translation, allowing Ray-Ban Meta wearers to translate speech between English and Spanish, French or Italian in real time. When a wearer speaks to someone who speaks certainly one of these languages, they are going to hear what the speaker says in English through the glasses' open-ear speakers and receive a transcript on their paired phone.
Ray-Ban Meta also offers Shazam support from firmware v11. Wearers can say “Hey, Meta, Shazam this song” to have the glasses try to search out the tune that's currently playing.
Meta warns that the brand new feature, particularly Live AI and Live Translation, may not at all times get all the pieces right. “We proceed to learn what works best and improve the experience for everybody,” the corporate wrote in a press release Blog post.
Ray-Ban Meta last received a serious update in November, when Meta began rolling out certain AI features to users of the glasses in France, Italy and Spain. The glasses proceed to sell quite well; in October, Ray-Ban owner EssilorLuxottica told Upload VR that Ray-Ban Meta was the best-selling eyewear brand in 60% of all Ray-Ban stores in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
