Have you ever watched a food scene on TV and thought, Wow, I wish I could cook that at home? Maybe it was the Il Timpano in “Big Night” or the Beef Bourguignon in “Julie & Julia.” Whatever your TV cravings, you're in luck if you happen to're buying a 2025 Samsung TV.
During its CES 2025 press conference on Monday in Las Vegas, Samsung announced Samsung Food, a brand new feature on its TVs that uses the corporate's AI processor to acknowledge food in your screen and discover a recipe for it.
If Samsung Food sounds familiar, it's probably since the brand has been around for some time. Samsung bought the food app Whisk in 2019 and renamed it Samsung Food in 2023. Today, the Samsung Food app for iOS and Android, which offers tools like a meal planner and AI-driven cooking steps, may also suggest recipes based on a picture — if you happen to spend greater than $7 a month on the premium version.
Unsurprisingly, the Samsung Food experience, designed for TV, is slightly more limited in what it could actually do. But Samsung Food on TV not only recommends recipes based on what it “sees,” it could actually also show the progress of grocery and takeout deliveries you place through the Samsung Food mobile app.
In a press release, Samsung touts the app's ability to create an ingredient shopping list based on the contents of your refrigerator. “It truly is the last word AI sous chef,” the corporate boldly proclaims.
Samsung Food's screen-to-recipe tool is fascinating. But we'll should see if it lives as much as the marketing hype. Recipe app SideChef's AI tool for converting photos into recipes leaves something to be desiredand popular AI summarizers and chatbots like ChatGPT don't do significantly better. (Pizza stick, anyone?)
In addition, the AI doesn’t do the actual cooking for you. As someone who's too lazy to organize meals today, let alone cook a dish just like the ones you see on TV, this might be a dealbreaker. But if you happen to like baking the Kouign Amann from The Great British Bake Off, these TVs could be just the thing for you.
You can find Samsung Food on the upcoming Samsung models QN90F, QN80F and QN70F.
