Apple is pausing AI notification summaries for news and entertainment apps after backlash for generating inaccurate news alerts. Additionally, the corporate is implementing changes to overall report summaries to offer greater transparency.
With the most recent round of developer previews for iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3, Apple is disabling notification summaries completely for all news and entertainment apps and can re-enable them after refinement in a future update.
The change comes just a few weeks after the BBC complained to Apple after certainly one of his articles misrepresented that Luigi Mangione, the person charged with murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, shot himself.
In addition to getting notification summaries for select apps, all notification summaries will now appear in italics to make it easier for users to tell apart them from regular notifications. Additionally, users can turn off notification summaries for a selected app directly from their lock screen.
Apple may also inform users that the Notification Summaries feature is a beta feature when they permit the feature. This notification within the Settings app informs users that the feature may contain bugs.
The changes come as no surprise, as Apple announced last week that it might release an update to “further make clear” that the text displayed in a notification summary is generated by Apple Intelligence. Some suspected that this may are available in the shape of a brand new label or badge, but thus far that isn’t the case.
While a public beta is anticipated next week, it’s unknown when iOS 18.3 will likely be available to most of the people.
