Perplexity acquires Read.cv, a social media platform for professionals

Read CVa social media platform for professionals that competed with LinkedIn has been acquired by AI-powered search engine Perplexity.

As a part of the agreement, Read.cv will begin ceasing operations on Friday. Until May 16, users can export their data, including their profiles, posts and messages.

“We have long admired Perplexity and imagine that great things occur when the world's knowledge is made more open and accessible,” reads a post on Read.cv Blog. “With this in mind, we’re excited to hitch Perplexity’s design and engineering team to proceed our shared mission of exploration and discovery.”

A Perplexity spokesperson confirmed the acquisition to TechCrunch via email but didn’t provide any further details.

“We are excited for the Read.cv team to hitch Perplexity” Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas wrote in a post on X. “The team is incredibly able to designing and constructing consumer and social experiences, and we stay up for working with them on many recent, exciting avenues!”

Founded in 2021 by Andy Chung, previously a product designer at Facebook, Mozilla and Salesforce-owned Quip, Read.cv offered a variety of tools that allow users share their resumes and chat with other professionals of their industry. Read.cv also offered features for organizations, akin to team profiles and the flexibility to post job openings and conduct candidate searches.

Recently, Read.cv introduced Sites, a feature that permits users to publish a private website using their Read.cv profile. Users could even get a “.cv” domain from Read.cv and connect it to their profile if needed.

Starting January 31, Read.cv plans to migrate .cv domains to its partners at Hello.cv, where users can proceed to administer them.

Perplexity's plans for West Berkeley-based Read.cv, which had and was around three employees supported by Funding from F7 Ventures and Fanjul Capital just isn’t clear. But Perplexity has increasingly invested in enterprise-focused functionality over the past summer start a marketing strategy with user management, “internal knowledge search” and more.

The moves could are available in part on the behest of the VCs backing Perplexity, who’re little doubt desirous to see a return sooner fairly than later. Perplexity has reportedly raised over $500 million in capital from investors including Institutional Venture Partners and is claimed to be valued at $9 billion.

Read.cv is Perplexity's third acquisition following its acquisition of Carbon, which focuses on connecting AI systems with external data sources. In 2023, Perplexity magically acquired, whose CEO was tasked with developing Perplexity's mobile app.
