The MIT Schwarzman College of Computing and that Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) recently celebrated the launch of the MIT-MBZUAI Collaborative Research Program, a brand new initiative to strengthen the constructing blocks of artificial intelligence and speed up its use in pressing scientific and societal challenges.
Under the five-year agreement, faculty, students and research staff from each institutions will collaborate on fundamental research projects to advance the technological foundations of AI and its applications in three core areas: scientific discovery, human flourishing and the health of the planet.
“Artificial intelligence is transforming nearly every aspect of human activity. MIT's leadership in AI is greatly enriched by collaboration with leading academic institutions within the United States and around the globe,” said Dan Huttenlocher, dean of the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing and Henry Ellis Warren Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. “Our collaboration with MBZUAI reflects our shared commitment to advancing AI in a responsible, inclusive and globally impactful manner. Together we will explore latest horizons in AI and produce far-reaching advantages to society.”
“This agreement will mix the efforts of researchers at two world-class institutions to advance groundbreaking AI research within the areas of scientific discovery, human flourishing, and the health of the planet. By combining MBZUAI's deal with fundamental models and real-world deployment with MIT's depth in computer science and interdisciplinary innovation, we’re making a transcontinental bridge for discoveries. Together, we is not going to only push the boundaries of AI science, but in addition be sure that these breakthroughs are pursued responsibly and deployed where they matter most – improving human health, enabling intelligent robotics, and advancing sustainable AI at scale,” says Eric Xing, President and University Professor at MBZUAI.
Each institution has appointed an instructional director to oversee this system on their campus. At MIT, Philip IsolaClass of 1948, Professor of Career Development within the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, will function program director. At MBZUAI, The songProfessor of Machine Learning, will tackle the role.
With support from MBZUAI – the primary university solely dedicated to advancing science through AI and based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates – the collaboration will fund quite a few joint research projects every year. The results can be publicly available and every project can be led by a principal investigator from MIT and one from MBZUAI, with project selection made by a steering committee composed of representatives from each institutions.
