ChatGPT's growth is starting to slow, based on latest data from the market research firm Sensor tower. Today, OpenAI's AI chatbot stays a frontrunner on this space, accounting for 50% of worldwide mobile downloads and 55% of monthly energetic users worldwide. However, the corporate noted that Google's Gemini has begun to outperform ChatGPT when it comes to download growth, monthly energetic user growth, and time spent in-app growth.
Over time, this increasing adoption could help Gemini close the gap with ChatGPT. This is something OpenAI is fearful about now that it's latest “Code Red” memo specified. The letter, written by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, directed employees to give attention to improving the corporate's AI products, particularly in areas comparable to personalization, reliability, imaging and more.
Looking at the present data, it is obvious that the race shouldn’t be over: each ChatGPT and Gemini proceed to see significant growth.
ChatGPT's global monthly energetic users have increased 180% year-over-year since November 2025, while Gemini's monthly energetic users have increased 170%.
However, the brand new data suggests that ChatGPT's global monthly energetic users rose only about 6% from August to November to about 810 million. (The monthly energetic user numbers within the chart above are rounded, the corporate notes.) This number could indicate that the AI chatbot is nearing market saturation, Sensor Tower says.
Meanwhile, Google Gemini's global monthly energetic users increased by around 30% over the identical period, as the discharge of the brand new Nano Banana image generation model led to greater adoption.
Additionally, the report found that roughly twice as many Android users within the U.S. now interact with Gemini directly through the Android operating system than through the standalone Gemini mobile app. This could give Google a competitive advantage in the worldwide market where Android dominates, as Gemini shouldn’t be limited to getting used only inside a mobile app or web interface.

Gemini can be increasing its share of the general AI chatbot market in comparison with all top apps comparable to ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, Perplexity and Grok. The company estimates that Gemini has increased its share of worldwide monthly energetic users by three percentage points during the last seven months (May-November 2025).
In comparison, ChatGPT's share of monthly energetic users worldwide fell by three percentage points during the last 4 months (August to November 2025).
Perplexity and Claude's challenges could also impact ChatGPT, as each competitors reported triple-digit growth for his or her respective chatbots in 2025, with the previous up 370% year-over-year and the latter up 190%.

ChatGPT also saw global downloads increase 85% year-over-year in November, although this fell in need of the general cohort's average growth of 110%.
Perplexity and Gemini saw the biggest growth, up 215% and 190% year-over-year, respectively.
Finally, the time Gemini app users spend within the app has greater than doubled in the previous couple of months, based on Sensor Tower. In November, Gemini users spent 11 minutes per day within the app, 120% greater than in March. This is probably going resulting from the recognition of its Nano Banana imaging model in September.
ChatGPT users' day by day time spent only increased by 6% over the identical period. Additionally, the time spent by ChatGPT users in November fell by 10% in comparison with July.
While current data suggests that Google could possibly be closing in available on the market leader, much of its recent gains may be attributed to the success of Nano Banana. OpenAI could speed up growth again by releasing its own latest products, provided they’ve the same impact.
