Spotify is roll out Prompted Playlists, a brand new AI playlist creation tool, for Premium subscribers within the US and Canada. The feature, originally tested in New Zealand, allows users to create a playlist by describing what they wish to hear in their very own words.
Prompted Playlists builds on a previous AI playlist product that launched in 2024, which enabled simpler prompts comparable to “Concentrate while working with instrumental electronica” or “Inspire yourself with fun, upbeat, and positive songs.”
Instead, the brand new Prompted Playlists feature allows users to clarify what they wish to hear in additional detail and in conversation mode.
For example, in a print demo, Spotify showed a playlist based on a protracted prompt that read: “Find me an artist I haven't heard but would probably love, or an artist I've only heard one or two songs by, and introduce myself to them. Create a playlist of songs that give me an summary of their catalog so I feel like I'm attending to know them. Place the songs you think that I like best, in the highest five places.”
The idea behind the brand new feature explained JJ ItalianoHead of Global Music Curation and Discovery at Spotify, goals to make it possible for anyone to create a playlist, even in the event that they don't know much about music curation or the precise words.
“For most individuals, this isn't a part of their job. They don't all the time have the time or energy to create the proper playlist at any time when your mood changes, and that's where prompt playlists are available,” said Italiano, whose team creates popular Spotify playlists like “Today's Top Hits,” “New Music Friday” and “Rap Caviar,” amongst others. “This gives listeners access to this creative process without having to know genres, years or industry jargon. You don't need the precise words. You just need your words.”
“If you’ll be able to describe a sense, you’ll be able to make a playlist,” he added.
The AI behind the feature analyzes the world of music in real time, including “trends, charts, culture and history,” Spotify says, in addition to the user's entire listening history since joining the service.
While playlists are tailored to their creator by default, users may use the tool to interrupt out of their usual listening habits and get other recommendations. That means they’ll specifically instruct the AI to make use of their very own listening history as a reference point, or they’ll instruct it to introduce them to songs they've never heard before, like in the instance above.

The announcements wouldn’t have to contain any musical terms. For example, users might ask for a playlist inspired by the weather or a favourite TV show.
Because the prompts might be shared, the feature could also result in a brand new form of creator – someone who creates AI prompts that others wish to try. While the prompt itself could be the identical, each user's resulting playlist would differ because it is tailored to their very own tastes and listening history. You could then modify this playlist further if mandatory.

Spotify says Prompted Playlists are the “next evolution” of its previous AI playlist feature. The new edition is more attuned to music trends and culture in real time, understands the complete arc of a user's listening behavior – not only what they've heard recently – and offers deeper control. However, the older AI playlist function is not going to be switched off. Instead, the 2 products will coexist, which could cause consumer confusion given the similarities.
The feature has some usage restrictions because it remains to be in beta and these may change over time. Additionally, it is just available in English for now.
The company couldn't say when Prompted Playlists would reach global subscribers, noting that it desires to first learn from these initial markets to tell future launches.
