Anthropic increases the value of its Haiku model

Anthropic's latest AI model has arrived. However, it’s dearer than the last generation and, unlike Anthropic's other models, cannot yet analyze images.

Claude 3.5 Haiku, which Anthropic announced last month, meets or exceeds the performance of Anthropic's flagship model, Claude 3 Opus, on certain benchmarks. Available via Anthropic's API and numerous third-party platforms, including AWS bedrockAccording to Anthropic, Claude 3.5 Haiku is beneficial for coding suggestions, data extraction and labeling, and content moderation.

Anthropic had previously suggested that Claude 3.5 Haiku would cost the identical as Claude 3 Haiku, its predecessor. Now it changes its tone.

“During recent testing, Haiku outperformed Claude 3 Opus, our previous flagship model, in lots of benchmarks – at a fraction of the associated fee. “For this reason, now we have increased prices for Claude 3.5 Haiku to reflect its increasing intelligence,” Anthropic wrote in a post on X

Pricing for Claude 3.5 Haiku starts at $1 per million input tokens (~750,000 words) and $5 per million output tokens. That compares to 25 cents per million input tokens and $1.25 per million output tokens for Claude 3 Haiku – a quadrupling.

Claude 3.5 Haiku also doesn't launch with image evaluation features, making it less powerful in comparison with Claude 3 Haiku in no less than a method. Alex Albert, head of developer relations at Anthropic, said on

Granted, Claude 3.5 Haiku can output longer blocks of text than Claude 3 Haiku, and the model has a more recent knowledge threshold (meaning it might probably reference more moderen events). Still, it's rare for an AI provider to extend the associated fee of a model in a series – raising questions on Anthropic's future pricing strategy.
