OpenAI's version of AI agents could arrive in January

OpenAI could release an “AI agent” tool as early as January.

This is in line with Bloombergwhich reports that OpenAI is near releasing software codenamed “Operator” that may perform direct actions on an individual’s computer. OpenAI reportedly plans to initially launch Operator as a research preview via its developer API.

The operator would compete with Anthropic's recently unveiled “Computer Use” agent feature and Google's supposedly consumer-focused Agent, amongst others. It's unclear whether OpenAI can have a bonus; Bloomberg reports that it could possibly be a general-purpose tool that performs tasks in an internet browser.

The report on Operator arrived on the identical day as that release of the OpenAI strategy paper with suggestions for the US AI strategy. That paper reportedly proposes, amongst other things, that the federal government create AI-focused “economic zones” that might allow work to construct AI infrastructure, and the formation of a bloc with U.S. allies to compete with China in AI.
