ChatGPT is coming to phones. No, no smartphones – landlines. Call 1-800-242-8478 (1-800-CHATGPT) and OpenAI's AI-powered assistant will respond starting Wednesday afternoon.
“(Our mission at) OpenAI is to make artificial general intelligence useful for all of humanity, and a part of that’s making it as accessible as possible to as many individuals as possible,” said Kevin Weil, chief product officer from OpenAI, during a live stream. “Today we’re taking the following step and bringing ChatGPT to your phone.”
The experience is roughly an identical to Advanced Voice Mode, OpenAI's real-time conversation feature for ChatGPT – minus the multimodality. ChatGPT answers the questions users ask on the phone and might handle tasks reminiscent of translating a sentence into one other language.
OpenAI offers US users quarter-hour of free calling, after which the decision simply ends. The company notes that standard carrier fees may apply.
Starting Wednesday, ChatGPT may even be available on WhatsApp for many who prefer to text the AI assistant. It's an easy backwards and forwards exchange. Since it's WhatsApp, you won't find the customization options offered within the official ChatGPT app.
As with ChatGPT over the phone, you don't need an account to benefit from the WhatsApp experience – although there’s a each day limit. Users will receive a notification once they approach this limit. They can then proceed chatting by downloading the ChatGPT app or using ChatGPT on desktop.
OpenAI says it’s working on additional features for WhatsApp integration, reminiscent of image evaluation and web search, but the corporate didn’t say when these is perhaps available.
“This is the results of a Hack Week project,” said Weil. “The team built this just just a few weeks ago and we actually liked it. They worked really hard to ship it and it's great to see it here. “We're just beginning to make ChatGPT more accessible to all of you.”
