To outside observers, AI researchers find themselves in an enviable position. They are in demand by technology giants. They take home staggering salaries. And they're in the most well liked industry immediately.
But all of this comes with enormous pressure.
More than half a dozen researchers TechCrunch spoke to, a few of whom requested anonymity for fear of reprisals, said the rapid pace of the AI industry has affected their mental health. Tough competition Tensions between AI labs have created an isolating atmosphere, they are saying, while rising stakes have increased stress levels.
“Everything modified practically overnight,” one researcher told me, “and our work – each positive and negative results – had a big impact, measured in things like product exposure and financial consequences.”
Just last December, OpenAI hosted 12 livestreams announcing over a dozen latest tools, models, and services. Google responded with its own tools, models, and services in a dizzying array of press releases, social media posts, and blogs. The forwards and backwards between the 2 tech giants has been notable for its speed — speed that researchers say comes at a high cost.
Grind and hustle
Silicon Valley isn’t any stranger to hectic culture. However, with the AI boom, public support for overwork has reached worrying heights.
At OpenAI it’s will not be unusual for researchers who work six days per week – well beyond work hours. CEO Sam Altman is claimed to be urging the corporate's teams to do that Turn breakthroughs into it public products on demanding schedules. There isn’t any relief in competing labs. The Google DeepMind team that built Gemini, Google's flagship line of AI models, once increased working hours from 100 to 120 hours per week fix a bug in a system. And engineers from xAI, Elon Musk's AI company, repeatedly post over work nights that stretch into the early hours of the morning.
Why the relentless pressure? Today, AI research can have a major impact on an organization’s earnings. Google parent alphabet lost The aforementioned bug caused a market value of around $90 billion, which resulted in Google's Gemini chatbot generating controversial depictions of historical figures.
“One of the largest pressures is competitiveness,” said Kai Arulkumaran, head of research at AI service provider Araya, “combined with fast timelines.”
Especially leaderboards
Part of this competition takes place very publicly.
On a monthly – and sometimes weekly – basis, AI firms attempt to edge one another out on leaderboards like Chatbot Arena, which rank AI models in categories like math and coding. Logan Kilpatrick, product lead for multiple Google Gemini developer tools, said in a post on X that Chatbot Arena “has had a non-trivial impact on the speed of AI development.”
Not all researchers are convinced that that is a superb thing. The pace of the industry is so fast, they are saying, that their work risks becoming obsolete before it will probably even be delivered.
“This makes many query the worth of their work,” said Zihan Wang, a robotics engineer who works at a stealth AI startup. “If there’s a superb likelihood that somebody goes faster than me, then what’s the purpose of what I’m doing?”
Other researchers complain that the deal with productization comes on the expense of educational camaraderie.
“One of the underlying (causes of the stress) is the transition of AI researchers from pursuing their very own research agendas in industry to working on (AI models) and providing solutions for products,” Arulkumaran said. “Industry expected that AI researchers could conduct academic research in industry, but that isn’t any longer the case.”
Another researcher said – much to his dismay and dismay – that open collaboration and discussion about research isn’t any longer the norm in industry, except for just a few AI labs which have adopted openness as a publishing strategy.
“Now the main focus is increasingly on commercialization, closed-source scaling and execution,” the researcher said, “without contributing to the scientific community.”
Running the Graduate Gauntlet
Some researchers attribute the source of their fear to their AI studies.
Gowthami Somepalli, a graduate student studying AI on the University of Maryland, said research is being published so quickly that it has change into difficult for graduate students to tell apart between fads and sensible developments. This may be very essential, Somepalli said, because she has seen AI firms increasingly give preference to candidates with “extremely relevant experience.”
“A PhD is mostly a reasonably isolating and stressful experience, and a PhD in machine learning is especially difficult attributable to the rapid evolution of the sphere and the 'publish or perish' mentality,” Somepalli said. “It could be particularly stressful if you’ve gotten many students in your lab publishing 4 papers, whilst you only publish one or two papers per 12 months.”

“During my PhD, I always suffered from imposter syndrome and almost dropped out at the tip of my first 12 months,” she said.
The way forward
So what changes, if any, could promote a less stressful AI work environment? It's hard to assume the pace of development slowing down, especially when there's a lot money at stake.
Somepalli emphasized small but effective reforms, resembling normalizing one's own challenges.
“One of the largest problems… is that nobody talks openly about their problems; Everyone puts on a brave face,” she said. “I believe people might feel higher if they might see that other people have problems too.”
Bhaskar Bhatt, AI consultant at skilled services firm EY, says the industry should work to construct “robust support networks” to combat feelings of isolation.
“It is critical to foster a culture that values work-life balance and where individuals can truly unwind from their work,” Bhatt said. “Organizations should foster a culture that values mental wellness as much as innovation, with concrete policies resembling appropriate work hours, mental health days and access to counseling services.”
Ofir Press, a postdoctoral researcher at Princeton, suggested fewer AI conferences and week-long “breaks” in paper submissions to permit researchers to take a break from pursuing latest work. And Raj Dabre, an AI researcher on the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology in Japan, said researchers needs to be gently reminded of what's really essential.
“We must make it clear to people from the beginning that AI is just work,” Dabre said, “and we want to deal with family, friends and the grander things in life.”
