Accordingly, Apple could develop its own AI wearable a report published Wednesday by The Information. The device is a pin that users can wear on their clothing and is supplied with two cameras and three microphones, the report said.
Should the rumored device come to market, it will be one other sign that the AI hardware market is gaining momentum. This news follows comments made on Monday by OpenAI Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane he told a Davos audience that his company will likely unveil its highly anticipated first AI hardware device within the second half of this 12 months. Further reports suggest that the device could also be a pair of earbuds.
Apple's device is described as a “thin, flat, circular disc with an aluminum-glass shell” that engineers have the desire to make it the identical size as an AirTag, “just a bit of thicker.” According to the report, the Pin may also feature two cameras (one with a typical lens and one with a wide-angle lens) for pictures and videos, in addition to a physical button, speaker, and a Fitbit-like charging strip on the back.
Apple may even be speeding up development of this product to compete with OpenAIs. The Pin could potentially be released in 2027 and reach 20 million units at launch, the report said. TechCrunch has reached out to Apple for more information.
However, it stays to be seen whether consumers want such an AI device. Two Apple graduates previously founded Humane AI, a startup that also sold an AI pin. Humane's pin also included built-in microphones and a camera. However, it’s faltered upon releaseand the corporate needed to shut down operations and sell its assets to HP inside two years of the product's launch.
