“Vaccination” helps people detect political deepfakes, study says

In our experimentWe exposed a 3rd of participants to passive vaccination: traditional text-based alerts concerning the threat and characteristics of deepfakes. Although we expected that energetic vaccination would work higher against this sort of misinformation, our results show that each passive and energetic vaccination might help people cope with the specter of deepfakes.

What's next?

Our research shows that vaccine messages might help people discover and resist deepfakes. However, it remains to be unclear whether these effects last over an extended time period. In future studies, we plan to look at the long-term effects of vaccination messages.

Our goal can be to review whether vaccination works in other areas outside of politics, including health. For example, how would people react if a deepfake showed a fake doctor spreading health misinformation? Would earlier vaccination messages help people query and resist such content?
