Elon Musk says “Probably none of us could have a job”

Elon Musk says that the most definitely scenario is that AI and robots will eventually replace just about all human labor, but he assures us that it’s probably a superb thing.

Musk spoke remotely during an interview on the Viva Technology 2024 event in Paris. He said a benign end result where AI doesn’t destroy humanity is the most definitely end result, offering odds of 80% of this happening.

He said that the natural progression could be that AI and robots would turn into so advanced that eventually, “Probably none of us could have a job.”

In this utopic scenario, Musk says that we won’t simply have a universal basic income. Musk expects that governments would offer residents with a universal high income.

Musk said that in the long run, advancements in AI and robotics will mean that “any job an individual is doing could be optional” and could be more of a hobby than out of necessity. “But otherwise, AI and the robots will provide any goods and services that you just want,” he added.

What is my purpose?

While which will sound good, he said that in a future where humans now not have to work we’ll be faced with some existential questions. “If the pc and robot can do all the pieces higher than you, then does your life have meaning?” Musk mused.

Musk says that as humans, our contribution to society could also be to supply meaning, or purpose to AI.

He explained that in our brains, the cortex is answerable for pondering and planning, while the limbic system is answerable for feelings and instinct. The cortex is at all times attempting to make the limbic system glad.

In a future where AI takes over the pondering and planning roles, it may also assume the role of creating the human limbic system glad. Human happiness might be what gives AI meaning and purpose.

Neuralink

Musk also spoke about his Neuralink project, which has had impressive results together with a number of snags with its first human test subject.

He explained that the final word goal of Neuralink is to have it evolve right into a high-bandwidth interface to “mitigate the danger of digital superintelligence.”

Musk sees the comparatively slow rate of human communication as a challenge to keeping a future AI superintelligence aligned.

If AI and robots might be doing all of the work for us, Musk sees Neuralink as a option to speed up the way in which we communicate with them by orders of magnitude.

He didn’t offer a timeline on once we would have the ability to chill and let the robots do our jobs for us but he’s mostly sure that it would work out to humanity’s profit.
