OpenAI signs contract to coach with Condé Nast content and publish stories in ChatGPT

OpenAI has signed a take care of Condé Nast – publisher of prestigious newspapers akin to The New Yorker, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Bon Appétit and Wired – to display stories from Condé Nast products in OpenAI’s AI-powered chatbot platform ChatGPT and its search prototype SearchGPT.

The specific conditions of the partnership weren’t announced. But in a memo Condé Nast CEO Roger Lynch hinted to employees that the “multi-year” contract would come with some form of payment from OpenAI; a Condé Nast spokesperson told TechCrunch that OpenAI can be given permission to coach with Condé Nast's content.

OpenAI declined to comment.

Condé Nast is just the most recent news company to achieve an agreement with OpenAI over how its works are presented and utilized in OpenAI's products. The AI startup's other publishing partners include Associated Press, Axel Springer, The Atlantic, Financial Times, News Corp and Time.

As my colleague Rebecca Bellan recently wrote, a few of these deals were made without the involvement of the publications' reporters and editors – much to the chagrin of a few of those employees.
