DeepMind employees sign letter in protest against Google's defense contracts

At least 200 staff at DeepMindGoogle's AI research and development department are dissatisfied with Google's reported Defense contracts – and based on Time they’re circulated An internal letter from May stated:

The May 16 letter says the signatories are concerned about “Google’s contracts with military organizations,” citing articles concerning the tech giant’s contracts to offer AI and cloud computing services to the Israeli military.

“Any involvement within the military and weapons manufacturing undermines our position as a pacesetter in ethical and responsible AI and violates our mission statement and stated AI principles,” the letter continues.

Although it represents a comparatively small portion of the organization's overall workforce, the memo suggests a culture clash between Google and DeepMind, which Google acquired in 2014 and whose technology Google pledged would never be used for military or surveillance purposes in 2018.
